Excursus 2: Composition

... a little more theory

Furthermore, we have added a subtable (composition) to the table Invoices, which is very closely linked to the table Invoices.

You can see this close connection

  • on the left in the blue sidebar, where the subtable Invoice Items has been added under the table Invoices and is not automatically visible.

  • by opening the field settings of the ➡️ linking field Invoices in the subtable Invoice Items. There, under Composition, you will see that Yes is displayed.

❓ Through this setting, you can retroactively convert a linked table into a subtable (Yes) or revert this change (No).

In the field settings, you can configure or undo the composition in the linking field

Properties of Subtables

  • The subtable is displayed as nested in the data model.
  • The subtable is not (directly) displayed in the sidebar of the database overview.

  • If a record in the main table is deleted, all linked records in the subtable are automatically deleted.
  • The link to the main table cannot be removed in the form view of the subtable.

this symbol is missing in the linking field.

✅ Subtables are well suited for elements that are closely connected.
