The account is free, so is the API key. I use it for development and have never had to pay anything. But you do need a billing account.

Another option to lookup records in another DB may be to "share" a veiw of the info you want to share. If you share JSON it is pretty easy to consume that data in another database.

Yes it does upload the document and images for the cloud version. If you share a table as HTML, the Image feild is "shared" via http. You can attach some types of documents to the Image field besides…
