@rcrema I’ve repeated the process. You are correct. Maybe something has changed in the recent updates. I sorted them in the past as described without it resorting.

Hi, while in administrative mode set your preferred group setting. Exit administrative mode and or save settings if that is an option. The group preference should then be saved.
