FORMATTING IMAGES FROM ANOTHER TABLE

I've used a formula field to call an image from a parent table. Is there any way I can add to the formula to duplicate the 'cover' formatting available in the image field?  At the moment images are showing up with white bands around the edge if they're not the same aspect ratio.
