Why are related fields apparently returned as an array?

When I try to add a column to a table view using a field from a related table it is returned as so:

Count(Name)

First(Name)

Last(Name)

Concatenate(Name)

This is unexpected as the related field is just a single line text entry. Am I doing something wrong?
