Beginner's question

This is so simple and basic I'm almost embarrassed to ask. I have a recipe database one of whose fields is 'Ethnicity', with various options (Chinese, Italian, Greek, etc.). I want to add a new option, but I can't remember how to do it. (I must have known at one time, because I created the database, but I'm lost now.) Can you help?

If you have a database with 'Ehtnicity' you can add a new record in there and it should appear in your dropdown on your recipe database/form.

Another place to look is if your field Ethnicity is a choice field then you would go to Edit Fields then simply edit the field to add a new choice.

If you created a dynamic choice field then follow Andreas comment about adding a new record to the Ethnicity table.

Thanks for the suggestions, Andreas and Fred. My problem, however, was that I could not Edit Fields. The reason, it turns out, is that I could not enter edit mode, and the reason for that was that my database was (unknown to me) stored in iCloud, rather than locally. This, for some obscure reason, prevents one from entering edit mode. The solution was to "Reorganize" the database, which (for some reason) restores it to the local hard drive, at which point one can enter edit mode (the red wrench makes an appearance on the upper right). After that, it was easy. But getting there sure was unintuitive.

smarcster Glad you figured it out.

I just want to clarify how the mac app version works so you can use it to it full capacity.

The app version of Ninox allows you the ability to save your DBs either locally or in your iCloud account. The big advantage of saving your DB on your iCloud drive is that then the DB is available to other devices (iPhone, iPad). For example, for my DB I do all my development on my MacBook Pro (MBP) and then can do some data entry on my iPhone.

The one thing I can not do on my iPhone is edit (red wrench) anything in DBs that I created on my MBP. Ninox marks the "owner" of the DB from the device that created the DB. If I wanted to I could "reorganize" the DB on my iPhone so then my iPhone is the "owner".

Another advantage of saving your DB to iCloud is if you lose your main device your DB is still available to you when you get a new one.

Saving your DB in iCloud is also not a "work around" for multi-user access. While you can access the DB from multiple devices at the same time, you will not see live updates of data entry from other devices. If you need multi-user access then you need the cloud version.
