How long will Ninox 3 remain?

I have an idea for a vertical application I would like to put together. I would far rather build this in Ninox 3 (I am finding the interface of Ninox 4 far too cluttered and it's still far from viable) but have concerns about how long it will remain for. Does anyone know how long Ninox 3 will be around?

Thanks John

As far as I understand, until the end of 2028

There's no need to worry. Feel free to design your database in Ninox 3, because a conversion tool will be released to convert it to Ninox 4. All features will be supported, as well as both versions of modularity. Also, all platforms of Ninox 3 will be supported at least until the end of 2028.

with the speed that v4 is moving i would expect that that v3 will be around longer than 2028.

Good thing too, in my opinion. It has become developer orientated, with the idea that, most of the time developers are going to be working on their latest project. Not so. A developer might spend a week or two putting something together but the user might be using it 5 days a week for years. All the developer tools then have to disappear to keep the UI as clean as possible. V4 has a very cluttered look to me that can't be hidden.

      Rant over.

      Regards John

sorry to be so late to the party on this but ...
where do i get my hands on a demo beta version of Ninox 4

I would like to see what is what and well before being forced to moved onto it.

I presume the migration tool is currently unavailable too?

Personally, I don't reallty care about have a bot build my apps/scripts etc. as part of the joy (or pain) of building stuff by hand is the learning curve one goes through and the knowledge gained!

Version 4 is still in its infancy; it seems to lack a lot of development. I don't know if anyone else shares this opinion, but it's similar to Airtable. It's best to wait a bit.

You can go to beta.ninox.com to sign up and give it a try. But be aware that it is NOT feature complete so it is more like alpha. Ninox calling it beta has gotten many people in a tizzy on Discord. I have to give them credit, when people spoke up, they have responded.

Like I said earlier, the pace they are on doesn’t give me confidence they will be feature complete by end of the year.

It is supposed to be v4, but it is full redesign so it is more like v1. So people expect a fully mature product and i hope they get there, but their timeline seems really optimistic. As Andy from Nioxus said, they are still working on v3 and building v4 with no demonstrative increase in staff.

Ah. A bit like our UK government - trying to do more but with less ! 🙂

I've tried developing some of my databases in the new Ninox 4 and it's been completely impossible. I absolutely don't understand this change; it's something completely different, another software for different experiences. Many formulas don't work, others only partially. I'd like to hear about any of your experiences. Mine has been catastrophic. I don't know why I even considered creating a copy of Airtable, perhaps a more powerful one, but so far my experience has been very bad and frustrating.

I understand how you feel. Just remember that v4 is not feature complete. The scripting part is not supposed to be feature complete until then end of summer, if we are lucky.

I suggest you’ll have several years of success with your application assuming your development is fairly quick.  The ninox standalone version will likely be the last to see a v4, certainly after public and private cloud subscriptions, maybe well after.  Furthermore, those using v3 will not likely wish to upset their business just to say they’re on v4, especially since this is far, far more than a version upgrade…more like a new and different app.  It will cost significantly to rebuild v3 stuff in v4 and to date, there is no migration tool either delivered or even publicly discussed in any detail.

Ninox has said that there will eventually be a migration tool. They can't stop v3 without it.

Thanks Fred, hadn’t heard that.  Given the pretty vast differences in how they work, at least from the little I’ve seen of V4, that’s going to be a heck of a migration tool.  For those of us with rudimentary apps, perhaps just rebuilding them in V4 from scratch will be the easier solution.  For those with large complex ERP-ish apps, migration will probably be a nightmare and more importantly expensive to pull off successfully.  Having done many large application migrations for companies in which I’ve been employed, these are all-consuming and their accuracy is dependent upon extensive detailed testing plans.  This also typically means new development is put on hold until post migration, making neither users nor management happy.

The chance of a major platform change to a tool like ninox is one of the factors in tool selection to begin with.  Knowing that V3 is dead and V4 is upcoming would eliminate ninox from most companies’ short list at least until V4 was fully delivered and active in the market for a few years.  V4 seems to be a huge risk for ninox as a company accentuated by the less-than-comforting transition plan and communications.

Like it or not, Ninox intend to drop V3 by end of 2027!

That is their current plan. But then they also thought this current version of v4 is beta. 😉As reality kicks in, things might get pushed.

Not yet. Right now it is just testing the workable functions. Wait until they say it is feature complete then you can start building things.

I have to say that I am interested some of their new design features like containers such. I think in the end it will be a fine product.

Though I have to say the big thing that is worrying me is their new limitations. Only 50,000 records per workspace at the Pro level? It is current 200,000 per database. So this would price me out if they don't change it.

Fred - am I missing something? 200,000 records limit? I have 514k records just in one table in one DB alone. If they are going to limit it to max 50k records - I seriously need to think about jumping ship!

well I am obviously wrong about v3 record limits. The limits only apply to cloud versions. App versions have no limits beyond your personal storage.

Fred I use cloud version (Pro) 🤣

Getting a bit nervous re Ninox (support) - lately becoming a lot less friendly and seems a bit more dictatorial ! For me I have the added dimension that I use this tool as a key element to run my business. V4 (Like it or not) will be an enforced move .. For me there is only so many times I can re invent the wheel (reprogram etc!) and may need to look towards a standard prebuilt software model (with the limitations that emply with this!)

I am nervous too. I guess I'll have to wait until v4 comes out and see what happens. I don't know where else to go at this moment.

I think many of us feel the same way; this doesn't look good with this version of Ninoxtable. I'm already thinking about where I can go next.

And cost Mel. We have an ERP system and it costs us a disproportionate amount of money to run each year. I could run my business on Ninox, or FileMaker (it did for a while) but then I'd have to spend all my time managing it and I prefer to have Ninox and FileMaker as companion tools that run alongside. Have you tried FileMaker?

HI John - Yes have used Filemaker as used to have it. We absolutely loved Dataease by Saffire. but it started to be come out dated due to heavy reliance on procedure scripts etc and their version of event driven scripts (OML) was hasteley implemented thus in the end it lagged behind. Access also worked worked for us - once you added a lot of VB scripting. But using it across the cloud was somewhat poor. Thus Ninox was a breath of fresh air - until recently - I am findind too many issues now creeping in. I have found Zigaflow and am testing it. This is general software but they also specialise on certain business sectors and my trade (promotional products and print) the package comes with all the main supplier API's as standard and theris way more functionality that what I could build into Ninox

I am also questioning the sheer amount of development time I employ to get new tasks etc up and running. and elements that i can't sort for my self like adding Stripe etc .summary and full invoice exports into Sage and the particularly supplier links/ customer dialing into Ninox to approve the proofs (like the knack) plus my own limitations of using enhanced html/css/Json/carbone etc. It tells me that I probably need to call time on Ninox. I need to spend more time on the quality and core elements of running my business. Customers are requiring for more functions regarding service/offering faster that i can implement them into Ninox. Which means I do have to look at off the shelf software albeit ones that a provide high degree of switchable options. That are forward looking to add in new elements (no not just AI 😄) and that can be customised to as near to my trade as possible.
