Edit a record

Sometimes when I try to edit a record, nothing happens. There is no screen that slides in from the right, allowing me to edit the record I just clicked on. Am I in the wrong mode, or doing something wrong? It doesn't happen all the time, only occaisionally and it often resets if I close the database and come back to it.
