Copying tables

Ninox is great when you want to copy an entire database, but, as far as i know, not so great when you want to copy and individual table to another db.

I have 3 different databases: one for development and testing, and two live databases (which do the same thing, but are for different sets of data).

When i develop a new screen, with an underlying table, if i copy the entire database and replace my live enironments with that, there are a couple of problems: 1) i get edgy when i replace a working live environment, with a whole new database 2) i then have to either not copy records and import the live data, or copy records, delete all the data from the main table, copy in or import the live data to the main table, and leave the ancillary tables as is.

It would be really nice to be able to simply copy a table from one database to another.

    You can do this very easy within the Ninox App - There you can import one database (or parts of it) into another.

    Click on the "Import data" button. Now select the "Ninox" option. You will now see all databases that you have saved under the "My databases" tab, i.e. local databases or databases stored in the iCloud. Select the desired database and click on "Next".

    You can now import all tables or just selected tables from the source database into the empty database. You also have the option of importing only the data model, that is, the structure of the tables (fields and links) without the data (data records) or attached files (files attached to data records). Simply check or uncheck the corresponding tables in the respective options.
    You can explicitly select the target table for import into existing tables.

    @Birger - I do not see this functionality. I am using the cloud version. When you say "within the Ninox App", do you mean a version other than cloud? (Sorry if this is obvious - I am new to Ninox and it's not clear to me.)

    @Rico, Well, I'm scratching my head over this one! I can select a table, click the gear icon above the list view, select import data and all I see is the CSV option. Can you break down exactly where you are seeing this? I just can't find it.

    Rico - Looks like you're on a Mac. I don't have that menu along the top. I'm on a Windows 10 PC running the Cloud version of Ninox. I don't see what you are seeing. Too bad I could have used that functionality. :(

    Nick, I am not sure what you are meaning to say. Ninox calls itself an "app" - even with the Cloud version. Here's a screen shot from one of Ninox's product description pages:

    Hi Jen, 

    We have mainly two product lines:

    The Ninox Apps for Mac, iPad, iPhone and Android.
    Here your data will be stored local or (for the Mac products) on your iCloud drive.
    There is a one time payment for the Mac App ($38,99), a one time upgrade in the iPad App ($16,99 - only if you want to use the iCloud sync), the iPhone App and the Apps for Android are free. You can install the Mac App on up to 5 devices if these devices run on the same AppleID. The Ninox App is basically for a single user that might have a couple of devices. Databases can be synched and shared with iCloud only.

     

    Ninox Cloud - our cloud service for any browser.
    This is a subscription service. It allows for team collaboration, cloud storage (in the Ninox Cloud) and access from any web browser.
    A user can log in to Ninox Cloud with username and password on any browser or from within any Ninox App. Team collaboration, user management, user rights and restrictions etc. are only available in Ninox Cloud. This product is recommended for more than 1 user who need to share a database and make changes.

     

    The function Birger is talking about is only available in the Ninox Apps for Mac, iPad or Android tablet.

    Jörg, thanks so much for your explanation. I really appreciate that you took the time to offer such a complete overview and clarification. Do you know if there any chance that this function will be included in the Ninox Cloud product in the future? Cloud users like myselft could benefit.

    Yes, we have planned to implement this function also in the browser version in the future.

    Thanks for your patience. 

    In the meantime you could probaly use one of the free tablet (iPad or Andoid tablet) Ninox Apps if you have such a tablet.

    Jörg - Great idea. I borrowed my grandson's iPad and downloaded the Ninox for iPad app. Score! I was able to open my databases. I selected one of them, went to the home page, clicked on Import Data and saw the three choices. I selected Ninox. However no list of other databases to select from appeared. The blue Next button was visible but does nothing. Thoughts?

    For anyone else going through this process: Here is the answer to the above issue. When you use an iPad, you will see a new group named My Databases which will initially be empty. Your source database must be imported into that group before it will show up in the list of possible source databases. (Download an archive of your source database from the group ("team") where it resides and then import that archive into the My Databases group.) Then proceed to Import Data in the target database and you will see the source database listed. Select that source database and press Next. Proceed from there. It works!
