Where are attachments kept ?

I have backed up and restored a database and some are missing. Is this because they are just links to objects on the local machine?

    Hi, 

    The attachments are stored direktly in the database as a file. They should not get lost while making a backup. Possibly it might take some time to save the backup and also to upload all the attachments also if you can already open the database, but not all of the attachments are alreade synchonized/visible.
