Dates before Christ - how to type

Are there practical ways to insert dates before Christ?
If you enter negative numbers in dates, they will always be considered positive.
For example, if you type 17 JAN -0012 in a date field, it will assume 17 January of the year 12, that is, 17 JAN0012.
