Further testing reveals that the Checkbox behavior in record edit does not match that in Bulk Edit, in that the record edit will only toggle between Yes/No you cannot get to a Null/Empty value.…

Then the Bulk Editor should reflect that, have Yes/No/Empty choices as the field edit dialog has for the default value.
